International webinar: Ethics in design

The webinar starts at 2 PM (CET)

Design has established itself as a valuable competence in the public sector. But what are the implications of designers getting a seat at the table? How do we take ethics along in the process?

The path for designers in the public sector is a minefield of ethical questions. In this webinar we will dive into some of these questions from various perspectives – from the academic point of view as well as the practical as we will learn from policy labs in e.g. Ukraine.

As designers we shape the services (and sometimes the policy) of the government. What role has ethics in our work? How do you take values along in your work, where do they collide with all kinds of though real-world-issues and how do you cope with this? And if the system says no, can we – as civil servants – say yes?

About the keynotes

Annelie Berner

Annelie is an independent interaction designer and researcher, focused on data visualisation and ethics. In her work, she collaborates with academics and scientists to make research tangible, bringing the power of design to bridge from research to the public. She teaches workshops and gives lectures on Designing Ethical Futures and Poetic Data.

How might we bring ethics up before things go down? Annelie will share her approach of using ethical theories to foresee challenging scenarios. She will present the potential of designers to bring up ethical questions and conflicts through storytelling and visual provocations, as well as hands-on practical tools.

Iryna Kupchynska & Ievgen Kylymnyk

Iryna currently works as a connector with regional audiences and vulnerable users of the state e-services at the UNDP Ukraine’s project “Digital, Inclusive, Accessible: Support to Digitalisation of State Services in Ukraine (DIA Support) Project“. The United Nations Development Programme is the global development network of the United Nations. It promotes technical and investment cooperation among nations and advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life for themselves.

She worked as a Solutions Designer at UNDP-organized Policy Lab in the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine. Before switching her interest to social design by getting a degree in social anthropology, Iryna has been working in communications for about 7 years, primarily with NGOs and startups.

Iryna will draw attention to awareness of the multiple practical ethics. Human rights-based approach (HRBA) and “Leave no one behind” as core lenses of the ethics of the UNDP-led design. While including perspectives of the groups influenced by designed policies, it is important to think of the groups that for some reason are not vocal: case of digitalisation of Ukrainian services.

Ievgen is Head of Exploration at UNDP. He is a public sector professional with more than 10 years of experience. His professional achievements are based on the ability to design meaningful processes, facilitate small and large teams, and work collaboratively with a wide range of partners to address wicked problems. Being a bridge between technical work and policy impact, as well as seeking creative solutions are his strong sides.

Ievgen will focus on the ethical aspect of designing policies for the diverse target audiences and offer some practical approaches on how to ensure a variety of solutions is considered before making the decision. What is the Collective intelligence approach and how it can help address the ethical challenges of policy design.

Roman Yosif

Roman is Executive Director at Laboratorio de Gobierno in Chile. He has been dedicated to innovation for more than 10 years, with special emphasis on the public sector. He has always been motivated by complex challenges, where collaborative work and interdiscipline are required. In his professional experience he has led from digital startups to cultural projects, and today as Executive Director of the Government Laboratory, he has the privilege of doing it in the design, implementation and management of relevant transformations of the State of Chile. His presentation is about how to deal with ethics in the process of implementing innovation to the public.

Laboratorio de Gobierno has been leading important public sector innovations in Chile in recent years. In that process of co-designing and co-implementing different kinds of transformations in the public services, the learning of how to deal with ethical problems has been very interesting during each stage of the public innovation methodology. This presentation will be a quick overview of that learning comparing two cases with different types of public problems, but sharing the level of complexity: For one side how to support and give orientation to women victims of violence, and for the other hand how to give a good service to people with drug addiction. The question will be: How to implement good services with and for the users, taking care of every kind of ethical issue that is related to the process and the result
